牛に跳ね飛ばされた男性がコンクリートとその牛の間にはさまれて死亡。今日のニュースより。

2年前の夏、滞在した、オランダの有機農家で牛に追いかけられたことがある。
スケッチをするのに、これはなかなかいいぞと、赤いプラスチックのバケツをひろって、いすにして、スケッチを始めたとたん、えらい遠くにいた牛がじりじりと私に向かって歩き始めた。

うそやろ。何で？
どんどんスピードはあがり、走ってくる。1トンはあろう肉塊がどやんどやんゆれていた。あれに、ぶつかられたら52キロしかないわたしは、ひとたまりもなかろう。
わたしは、これはたまらんと、ヤギ小屋に｣走り始めるも、長靴をはいている上に、草はぬれており、思い切り滑ってつんのめる。
スケッチブックも、鉛筆もぬれた草の上に散乱。
ヤギ小屋に走りこみ、間1発でドアを閉める。
鼻息荒い牛とドア越し10センチ。こわかったー。

後でわかったのは、あの赤いバケツは、その牛さん専用のえさバケツだった。牛はえさをくれるとおもったらしい。危なかった。

この体験がなかったら、たんに読みすごすニュースだった。いつもは、温厚たらりたらりとしかうごかない牛が突然あばれだしたら、ひとたまりない。

Yesterday in Japan a cow charged at a man, slammed him into a wall and crushed him to death. 

When I stayed at an organic farm in the summer of 2011, I was trying to sketch goats and a cow. I found a red bucket when I was walking to the field. It seemed like it was strong enough to use as a chair.

I started sketching peacefully. After 5 hours of work, it was nice to relax and sketch outside with the animals. 

However, as soon as I started sketching, I felt the cow staring at me
and little by little it started to move towards me. 

Why?

Its steps gradually became faster. Finally she started to run. The fat on its body was wobbling as it ran. 
My heart started beating at an incredible speed and I ran to the barn. But to my horror, I slipped as I was wearing Wellington boots and since it had recently rained, the grass was wet. I picked myself up as fast as I could and ran into the barn and closed the wooden door tightly shut. 

That was close, I thought to myself. The distance between the cow and I was only 10cm. 

At the time, I had no idea why it had chased me. Finally, I understood. The red bucket I had been sitting on was the bucket the owner had used to feed it. So it thought I had come to the field to feed it.

The cow weighs about a tonne and it's obvious that if I had been crushed by it I would have had a serious injury or possibly even worse.


I pray for the soul of the man who died in Japan yesterday.
