watercolour papers

I bought a new watercolour paper pad. I was so excited but this paper has a huge problem.
It absorbs water too much and it makes lifting the colours difficult.
I simply want to know  how other people are using this paper.

I named this mosque "Hydrangea mosque", because the doom has a beautiful bluish green which remains me of hydrangeas.I painted this before, but I tried to paint this again on the new paper, but the paint was absorbed quickly and turned really dirty.I have no idea how to handle this paper.

Christmas concert on 8th of December. She was an acordionist. About 200 dinner guests stopped chatting, because her performance was amazing. The tune was a very quiet Christmas tune. She grabbed all our hearts.

Al Ain Camel race track

It was around 6:30am.
The sun came up behind a pinkish grey cloud.
All 4x4s were waiting to run outside the race track along their camels to encourage them.

Green Mubazarrah in Al Ain. This is one the tourist point in Al Ain, because there is a hot spring.
There are separate male and female hot springs.
The hot spring water is running like this all day. I still don't know where it goes.

This is a old fashioned Japanese storehouse. I saw this in my Etegami friend's blog.
It inspired me, so I painted this from the photo, but I didn't plan carefully so the composition is not great.

As a daily painter, the cost of watercolour papers causes problems.
Finding good quality paper at a reasonable cost is the eternal problem for all daily painter?

  1. Hi Midori. I love the mosque painted in blue. It is a very attractive vignette! I also like the little building with the lattice-work on the bottom. And the smiling woman is great - she has such a big, warm smile, and a loving face. Beautiful work, Midori!!

  2. Hello Midori:) I have different kind of w.c. papers and one of them has the same problem as yours. In the beginning I hated it! Now I only use that paper if I don't paint loose(like your first painting in this post). It certainly is not my favorite paper. My favorite paper, not too expensive is "Terschelling", I'm afraid it's not available in the U.E.A.
Your mosque painting and the painting of the woman with the acordeon are great, but your portrait painting and the one with the cars are also beautiful. Keep trying on that paper. You will win!:)

  4. Dear Midori paper is a watercolorist nightmare! Even when it's good, I buy the same brand to find out after some time that became different! Sometimes in a sheet of expensive paper by Arches 640 lbs there are bad points that create unwanted effects.
For technical loose and gestural, I like to use Canson Montval also (which is one hundred percent cellulose) and not too expensive.
In Italy where I live Fabriano offers many solutions for a good price .... Your watercolors, are always very remarkable on every paper you paint!Rita.
