Alone

日本大好きのエジプト人、Dさんと話しているときに、
なぜか、日本の孤独死の話になった。
エジプト人の彼女は非常に驚いた。

一人で住んでいるひとが多い日本の、
現在の深刻な問題ひとつは、孤独死なのだというと、
エジプトでは、ありえないという。

エジプトだけではなく、
イスラム教の国には、
宗教的な教えが半分、後は代々受け継いだ文化として
家族の中で、高齢者になっていくものを
老人ホームなどへはいれないで、
最後まで、家族で世話をするので、
孤独死とかはありえないという。
それに、老人ホームのようなもの自体が存在しないというので、
今度はわたしが驚いた。
そういえば、ここUAEでも、老人ホームとか、老人福祉とかいうことばをきいたことがない。
痴呆症がでようが、寝たきりになろうが、家族のだれかが、
最後まで、世話をすることになっているという。
ほんとに、そんなことが可能なのだろうか。

When I was talking with an Egyptian lady, Ms. D, a couple of days ago, I explained about one a serious social problem in Japan,"Kodoku shi" which means " dying alone".

There are so many elderly people who live alone and die alone in Japan.

 Ms.D said it does not happen in Egypt at all.

It will not happen in other Islamic countries either because, for religious and cultural reasons, elderly people are cared for by their family.

Anyway, there is no nursing home in Egypt she added.

Speaking of nursing home, I've never heard of it in UAE either.

Even if they are senile man or women, and they are in a situation where they can't move by themselves which means they have to stay in their bed all day, their family carers them until the end of their days.

It is impossible in Japan to care for elderly people without nursing homes and carers who look after patients instead of families.

I just want to know more about what  Egypt or other countries are doing for elderly people.
