Al Ain Oasis

きのうは、乳がんで苦しむ親戚の女性の肖像画を描いてほしいという、
エジプト人の女性がやってきた。その親戚の人に元気になってほしいので、プレゼントしたいという。
そんな大切なものをわたしなんぞが、できるとはおもえないし、会ったこともない人を写真から起こすというのは、わたしだけではなく、だれにしてもむずかしいもの。
乳がんで苦しむ親戚の人を喜ばせたいという、Dさんの顔をみていると、
断るわけにもいかず、期待しないでまってくださいということになった。

そのエジプト人のD さんは私がイラストを描いた子供の本の作家の友達だということがわかった。
Al Ain の町は狭いので、なんらかの形で、ほとんど必ずというほど、だれかとつながっているので、恐ろしい。

Dさんは、日本が大好きなのという。
特に、どのへんがすきなのという質問に、意外な答えがかえってきた。
"おしん"！！！
若いころ、エジプトで、おしんをみていて、日本が大好きになったという。
ちょっとまって、エジプトで、おしん？
東南アジアでは、よく見てるというのは、きいたことがあるけど、
エジプトで人気があるというのは、初めてきいた。
いったい、世界何カ国に配信されていたのか
こうなったら、是が日にでも、知りたい。

おしんのなかで、雪の中の川の冷たい川で、大根を洗うシーンがある。
スタジオではなくて、
外で、ほんとに雪の中での撮影だった。
あのシーン覚えてる?と、Dさんにきくと、
ちゃんとおぼえていて、エピソード８０くらいあったとおもうけど、
最後までみたのよと、自慢気にDさんはいう。
エジプト人とおしんの話をするなんて
想像もしなかった。

感動は、国境を越えるのだ。

An Egyptian lady, Ms. D, came to me yesterday to order a portrait of her relative who is suffering from breast cancer. She said her portrait would be a great present for her relative.

"I don't think I can do it because I've never met the lady, so it would be very difficult without meeting  her." I would have liked to say that, but I couldn't turn her down because I feel sorry for Ms. D's relative.

I said "I would try my best.” to her.

 When I was talking with Ms. D, I found out she is a friend of the author who wrote the kid's book "Anise Loves Green Food'' which I did the illustrations for.

Al Ain is a small town, so it often happens we find ourselves connected to each other.

She told me how much she loves Japan. 

Especially, she said, the TV drama ''Oshin", is the best. She learned some Japanese words from the drama.

Wait for a minute, I thought, Oshin in Egypt?

She used to watch it on TV when she was 8 years old.

I knew Oshin is very popular drama in Asian countries, but I've never heard that it had played in Egypt. How many countries was Oshin available in?

‘Do you remember the scene which Oshin was washing white radish in icy cold water?’ I asked her.

I couldn’t believe  I was talking with an Egyptian about Oshin.

She said, "Of course I do, it was an amazing scene and I watched until the end of the drama, it must have been around 80 episodes."

I don’t think anyone in Egypt has ever washed daikon, white radish, and especially not in freezing cold water. Something about that scene has made it universal. There is no border when it comes to human experience and the ability of some actors to make people impressed.
