GCC music competition

One of the judges and one of the competitor.

Dubai is a very difficult city to be in if you are from Al Ain.

We had to go to Dubai this weekend, because my daughter had competed in a music competition that was held just yesterday.

I don't have any good memories from Dubai.
Just complicated roads and bad driving.

The competition was supposed to begin at 9 AM. Since we are not familiar with Dubai,  we decided to stay there from Thursday night.
After my daughter's karate lesson, we started to drive to Dubai at 7:30pm. We were supposed to reach the Tulip Inn Hotel at 9:30PM.

Everything went smoothly until we got close to the hotel, then the GPS got stuck as there was a new road that it was not familiar with. But eventually, we found the hotel. So who's going to take a shower first? we all thought. Hurray!

But we were too tired to take a shower so instead we went to bed.

Friday morning. I booked the Tulip Inn Hotel since it was only a two minute walk to the auditorium where the competition was being held and I didn't want to rushed in the morning. I thought it was perfect. However, another difficulty was waiting for us. When we reached the Knowledge Village auditorium, there was no sign of the music competition. Lots of adults were queuing. There was a photography competition instead. We called the director of the music competition, but he didn't pick up telephone.
Had we come on the wrong day?  I was really nervous.

Finally we got the director of the music competition. He said "Where are you? The competition has already started!"
We said  "Where are you? We can't find you at the Knowledge Village."
The competition was on in Media City auditorium. It was next to the Knowledge Village. We finally reached the venue of the competition by taxi. When we got there, I heard the sound of violin. I was relieved, but unfortunately my daughter's performance time had passed. We were so disappointed  but the director said my daughter would be able to play after all the kids finished their performances.
My daughter played two tunes on the piano. It was a fantastic performance.

Kwowledge Villege block1 Auditorium.

She performed two tunes for only the first round, because the tune which was supposed to be played for the second round was a very difficult tune and ten pages long. She was practicing  it but one day she complained that her right hand had become very painful. She also did not have enough time to practice. So she decided not to go in for the second round. Even if she was chosen for the second round, she hadn't practiced that assigned song so she thought there was no point to wait for the results. So we left the auditorium and went to Dubai Mall for lunch with our friend.
When we were in Kinokuniya book shop, one of the judges called me and said my daughter could play in the second round. She also said that she could just play the same two tunes that she had played in the first round. Oh no! We had thought. We should've stayed there but it was too late.

That was her first ever music competition.
We saw many children from around the GCC area come together and play many instruments. We discovered that some children were in the Dubai Orchestra.

All the kids had enormous talent.
We had a really good experience yesterday.

In fact, I wanted to take piano lessons when I was kid, but we couldn't afford it. I felt like it was a dream come true, when my daughter was playing piano in front of 10 judges and an audience.  She did a very good job.
Congratulations!

You might think I'm strange but I always feel interested in parents who take videos of their children.

Knowing that the parents love their children.

Their eyes are very serious.

I appreciate Ms. G who gave my daughter this great opportunity.

Mohannad Jissiri。
Rondino Sibelius

M J,

I'm fascinated by his violin. He showed us that Music should be fun.
His song was a great choice and he looked like he was enjoying himself. I couldn't see a slight bit of nervousness on his face. He was full of confidence but not arrogant at all.
Rules (in my opinion) to be successful in a competition:

1.The tune being played should be understood by even those who don't play music.

2 ."I want to listen to it again" is what people should think after hearing the piece.

His performance was definitely excellent.
I wanted to know what tune he played. He told me it was Rondin O Sebelius.

Of course my daughter did well too.

Flower Man

I went to a park next to the old UAEU campus.
Some gardeners were working very hard. One guy was always smiling. We thought he must be happy to see people who come here to appreciate his job. That is why he is smiling. Unfortunately we can't speak Arabic so we can't talk with him, but it is easy to imagine what he was thinking. Since to get into the park we have to cross a very busy road without a zebra crossing the park was very quiet.
When we stayed there for 2 hours, he never stopped moving, watering, weeding, sweeping dead leaves, it seems like there are so many things to do to produce these flowers.

Before leaving, I wanted to take his photo. When I found him he was removing old marigolds from a garden. So I named todays post "Flower Man". (Inspired by my daughter).

Green Day

My daughter, along with the rest of her English class, were given an assignment to write a Valentine's Day poem (even though it's very late) to someone they admire, or maybe even love (ha).
So, of course, my daughter wrote her poem to her favourite singer from her favourite band: Billie-Joe Armstrong from Green Day.

My life without you would be
Rock and roll without a drummer.
It would be just like
A year without summer.

If I could not listen to your music
my world would fall apart
If I don't see your face
my day just doesn't start.

If I could not hear you sing
I would feel so very blue
plain and simple,
my life would suck without you.

Al Ain Art club

(From Al Ain Art Club 21/2 Wednesday,a member N's garden)

( From Al Ain Art Club 21/2.Model, D and L)

Al Ain Art Club, 21/2/13.
D and L contributed as models. They sat still for 20 minutes. I appreciate them very much.
I sketched them rather than take a photo of them. I thought it was not so bad, so I painted seriously on a table until the end. I didn't see the painting from far when I was painting  to check whether the proportions were all right or not.
Finally I found that L's arms became just like wrestler's arms and even D's are too big as well. D's proportion was not properly sketched. I always tell my students that they should always look at a painting from far away, but I didn't do so myself and I failed. Sorry D and L.
Someday I'll paint them from a photo.

water in desert

Last December, we only got rain for one day.
Luckily I was in a photo shop at the time. When I came out of the shop, there was a big puddle and a cat was drinking water from it. It stopped raining already and blue sky was beginning to appear.
So the blue sky reflected on the water.
This painting is my most favorite which I painted on last December.

Wadi Park

(near Al Ain Rotana Hotel)

Fox!

Just last night, as we were having dinner, my daughter suddenly remembered a funny story from when she was just 5 and she told us.

One of her best friends at the time who was a boy told her,"You know, there's this word that's called the 'f word' and it's a really bad word."
My daughter immediately thought 'fox' was the word.
When she asked her friend what it was, he said: "I can't tell you, my mum's here."
So my daughter was convinced that the f-word was fox.
At school, when 'Story Time' came around, when the teacher would read out the word fox, my daughter would be confused and rather shocked: "Why is the teacher saying such a bad word in front of the whole class?" she would ask herself.
One day, she found out that the f word was not actually fox. I wish I could've seen her face as she realized. It would have been hilarious!
Thank you for visiting my blog.

Wadi Adventure

Al AinArt Club

Wadi Adventure in Al Ain.
Can you believe this is not a natural river?

There is a beach, but we can't see it in this painting. Al Ain Art Club often get together here, but we haven't walked around here.

Lots of Kayak Olympic competitors from Europe have come here for training.
Their bodies are nicely fit by training. They walk in swimsuits. I feel so lucky, I have got free models for sketching over there. If they can stop moving for at least three minutes it would be great though.

Since I took the photo of the water from the observatory of Wadi Adventure, the view of the river is from above. So the angle is not great, but good for practicing painting water.

Notan

(Hi renate, I painted this for you.)

Like sushi, the word notan is used in English yet it came from Japanese.
It makes me surprised.
Notan means tone or tone value.
By how and why did this Japanese word become a common English one too?

I feel a sense of Japanese power.
I also find it quite funny; when the Japanese are speaking English, they say tone/tone value but English speakers say notan.

I'm little bit busy these days, one more week I have to be patient.

Thank you for visiting my blog.

Help me Fly

Falcon:  Rabbit, do you think you could help me? I want to fly!

Rabbit: I wish I could help you. If you could help me move, then I could help you fly!

Tsubasa wo Kudasai – Give me Wings Lyrics

Romaji lyrics:
Ima watashi no negai goto ga
Kanau naraba tsubasa ga hoshii
Kono senaka ni tori no youni
Shiroi tsubasa tsukete kudasai
Kono oozora ni tsubasa wo hiroge
Tonde yukitai yo
Kanashimi no nai jyuna sora e
Tsubasa hatamekase yukitai
Ima tomitoka meiyo naraba
Iranai kedo tsubasa ga hoshii
Kodo monotoki yume mita koto
Ima mo onaji yume ni mite iru
Kono oozora ni tsubasa wo hiroge
Tonde yukitai yo
Kanashimi no nai jyuna sora e
Tsubasa hatamekase yukitai

If my wish were to come true right now
I’d wish for wings
Please put white wings
On my back like a bird’s

I want to spread my wings
And fly in this sky
I want to make my wings flutter
In a free sky without sorrow

That thing I dreamt of as a child
I still dream of it, unchanged, now

I want to spread my wings
And fly in this sky
I want to make my wings flutter
In a free sky without sorrow

Honey & Ginseng

Recently, the Japanese community here in Al Ain is talking about honey from New Zealand. Honey is good for you.

Ours was almost empty, so I bought a new bottle from the supermarket.

I found some bottles of honey that are very expensive. They cost ten times more than the type I usually buy for pancakes.

One of them looked very attractive.
"Honey and Ginseng", made in France!
I could not find any connection between France and ginseng, but when I read the label, the words made me decide to buy it.
"Cure for all illnesses, ginseng has been used for over 4000 years." It was a very bold motto.

The cost of that honey was three times more than the type I usually buy.
Recently, I've had a very stiff shoulder. I thought maybe there was a possibility the honey could help with this. I had three spoonfuls. I felt like my body became very light and my stiff shoulder was almost gone before dinner. I thought this honey is amazing.

In the night,I carefully started to read the honey's label  .
99% honey. 1% ginseng.
What?

Just 1%?

This is a 250g honey bottle. 1% means just 2.5g of ginseng. It means almost nothing in there.

I felt like the stiff shoulder immediately came back.

Barry Evans

He is a construction worker. When I saw him in a petrol station. I was fascinated by his red scarf and face.
I was about to ask him could I take his photo, but I realized I had forgotten to put the battery in my camera.
I went home, picked up the battery and got back to the petrol station. He was a very cheerful man. I found his working glove, which has a red line in the wrist, was great as well.

I love this piece.

But there is a big problem which you won't be able to see. It doesn't look like him at all. Hahaha.

Al Ain is very close to the Omani border. So lots of Omanis come in this town. Omani wear hats like this. Emiratis wear a type of scarf called a qitra (I'm not sure about the spelling).

I got some new years card from Japanese friend last week.
So I painted cheery blossom.
I'm going to send it this week, it might reach Japan in March.

HaniHani and the lion 18

Today, I want to type about Barry Evans who became famous in the show "Mind your language" which was televised 34 years ago. His role, as an English teacher, suits him.

Every night, I watch an episode with my daughter on Youtube.

I checked about him on the Internet.

I had thought he must be living peacefully somewhere in England with a wife , but I was shocked to find that he passed away 15 years ago.

He was an orphan and was raised in an orphanage. He bloomed as an actor, but he passed away mysteriously at a young age.
I feel really sorry.

Whenever I go to the park for sketching, some people stop and talk to me. Last weekend, a Sri Lankan couple came to me and we talked for quite a long time.
Finally they showed their photos and their parents' photos as well. I wanted to borrow all the photos, because all of them were really beautiful.
The man, Malcolm, showed his photo. He said that it had been taken 15 years ago. There was a big difference between each photo and that was his hair.
He said since he came to UAE, his fair had gone thinner.
Certainly, his forehead got very wide.
He is still 39 years old.
He said seriously: "Because the water of UAE is very harmful for my hair". I was suspicious but he was really serious so I couldn't say anything.

''The water from Al Ain, though it is desalinated, chemicals are added into it later which is not good for our hair.'' I wanted to ask him if this had been proven scientifically, but I decided not to.

Mitsumasa Anno

 Mitumasa Anno (artist) says:
”Paintings are one's lifelong companion, regardless of professionals or amateurs” in his book.
Anno says ''There is no basic rule for painting, I want to teach how to paint but I can't, the basics of art and painting is found in the heart, so there is nothing that is better than feeling "I love painting." He added: "Lives which have paintings are rich" and he continues to explain this passionately.

Thank you for visiting my blog.

Have a good weekend. :)

Mind your language

My daughter watched an old British television show from the 1970's called 'Mind Your Language' at school. She showed it to me afterwards and I thought it seemed like it was discriminating cultures but I also found it very amusing.

My favourite character is the Pakistani man, Ranjit. He is terrific.
But Pakistani's might be mad as they could think it is insulting.
The Japanese man in the show, Taro, is always walking around with a camera hanging around his neck.

Maybe this drama was accepted at that time, but I think it would be difficult for it to be on television in 2013.

Luckily, I've been having a chance to teach watercolour to some kids.
Yesterday, I said to them ''Be bold, ignore tiny details, use lots of colour and enjoy colour mix!''
but one girl asked me ''Wait, to do watercolour, we have to have no hair? We have to be bald?"

The pronunciation is totally different between bald and bold. Unfortunately, it's still hard for me to say them properly.

"No, no," I said. "Bold, not bald."
But when I repeated bold and bald, I was confused which is which.
Teaching watercolour is lots of fun, but still I'm struggling with English.
Luckily, where I work is an International school. So all the kids get used to listen to English spoken by people as English as their second or even third language.

The girl with borrowed wings

Rinsai Rossetti

My friend's daughter's first book has been published.
Her name is Rinsai Rosetti and she is still 21 years old.
She lives in Paris and is, at the moment, writing another book.

The book is for teenagers, but I enjoyed it very much.
But it is very strange for me to read a book and I've known the author for almost 12 years. In the book, when she has a conversation with her father, all I can imagine is the real her talking with her real father. I just find it strange.
She joined our Al Ain Art Club for a while last year.
She showed her talent in art.

I can't wait to see her next book on display in the bookshops. :)

A way of professional

I had a chance to talk with a professional pianist last night.
She is one of the judges in an upcoming music competition and she has also been judges for many other music competitions around the UAE.

I was startled when I asked her how many hours she used to practice piano a day.

She said when she was young she used to practice piano about 14 hours a day during holiday.
I was astonished.
She said the lesson would start at 7am and she would practice for 5 hours.
When lunch time came around, her teacher would tell her to put her hands into cold icy water.

And the practice would start as soon as the break ended.

It is not easy to be a professional.
